They fail a little at a time: an extra gift here, a grocery run for visiting family there, shipping fees nobody planned for. By January, the total is a surprise. In the [National Retail Federation’s October 2026 survey](https://nrf.com/media-center/press-releases/affordability-shapes-winter-holiday-shopping-according-to-nrf-holiday-survey), 56% of holiday shoppers said the state of the economy will affect their spending plans. And in [LendingTree’s survey](https://www.lendingtree.com/credit-cards/study/holiday-debt-tariffs/) after last season, 37% of Americans said they took on holiday debt, averaging $1,223, with most expecting it to take three months or longer to pay off. The fix isn’t spending nothing. It’s deciding your number before the season decides it for you. Here’s a plan you can set up in an evening. ## 1. Start with one total, not a gift list Most people write a list of everyone they want to buy for, then add up the cost. Flip it. Start with how much you can spend without touching rent, utilities, regular bills or your emergency savings, and without carrying a balance into the new year. ### A quick way to find that number: - Look at what’s left in your checking account after November and December bills are covered. - Add any money you’ve already set aside for the holidays. - Subtract a cushion for the unexpected — a car repair doesn’t care that it’s December. What remains is your holiday total. Everything else in this plan divides that number up.   ## 2. Budget the whole season, not just gifts Gifts are usually the biggest line, but they’re rarely the only one. Give each of these its own amount: - Gifts for family, friends, teachers and coworkers - Food and hosting — holiday meals, extra groceries for houseguests, party contributions - Travel — flights, gas, pet boarding, parking at the airport - Decorations — a tree, lights, a replacement for whatever didn’t survive last year - Outings — shows, dinners out, event tickets - Giving — donations, toy drives, holiday tips for people who help you all year - Extras — shipping, wrapping, cards and postage In Florida, hosting often costs more than people expect. When family comes down for a week of sunshine, the grocery bill, extra towels and a few dinners out add up quickly. Give hosting a real number. ## 3. Put a name and a number on every gift Once the gift total is set, split it by person and write it down. A notes app or a single spreadsheet is enough. Hypothetical example: A household sets a $1,200 holiday total. They plan $700 for gifts, $250 for food and hosting, $100 for decorations and extras, and $150 for outings and giving. The $700 for gifts is then split across nine people, with a little more for the kids and less for coworkers. When you find the perfect $90 gift for someone budgeted at $60, you have a choice to make on paper, not at the register: move money from another line, or keep looking. ## 4. Plan for the costs people forget These are the ones that quietly break a budget: - Shipping to out-of-state family, especially near the deadlines - Wrapping, bags and cards - Holiday tips for regular service providers - Last-minute gifts for the guest you didn’t expect - Subscriptions that start as “free trials” attached to gifts - January — your regular bills still arrive, and so do the card statements for anything charged in December If your budget has no line for these, add one. ## 5. Decide how you’ll pay before you shop How you pay changes how much you spend. Pick your method ahead of time: - Cash or debit keeps spending tied to money you actually have. - A credit card works only if you’ll pay the full statement balance when it arrives. Carrying a balance means paying interest on this year’s gifts well into next year. - Buy now, pay later plans split a purchase into installments, but several small payments across several stores are easy to lose track of. If you use them, write each payment date on your calendar. Some people keep holiday money in a separate savings account so it doesn’t blend in with bill money. When that balance is gone, the holiday budget is done. ## 6. Track as you go, not after A budget only works if you can see it. After each purchase, update your list. It takes 30 seconds and it’s the difference between “I think I’m fine” and knowing. The NRF survey found that 43% of shoppers start before November, often to spread out their spending, while 64% plan to do most of their shopping over Thanksgiving weekend. Either approach works if each purchase comes off the list. Sales help only when the item was already on it. ## 7. Build traditions that don’t cost much Some of the best parts of the season around here are free or close to it: - The Sarasota Fall Fine Art Festival at J.D. Hamel Park, Nov. 14–15, with free admission - The Venice Holiday Parade, celebrating its 50th year on Saturday, Nov. 28, stepping off at 6:30 p.m. downtown - The Sarasota Holiday Parade on Main Street, the first Saturday in December (Dec. 5) - Winter Wonderland on Old Main Street in Bradenton, Dec. 5 - The Holiday Boat Parade of Lights on Sarasota Bay, Saturday, Dec. 12, 6:30–8:30 p.m. Pack a thermos of hot cocoa and some folding chairs, and you have a family tradition that costs almost nothing. See our \[November events guide\] for more. ## 8. Shop local where it fits your list Small Business Saturday falls on Nov. 28 this year. Shopping at local stores can actually help a budget: you see the item in person, you skip shipping, and gift cards to a neighborhood restaurant or shop are easy to fit into any price range. It’s also money that stays in Sarasota and Manatee County. ## 9. Start next year’s holiday fund in January The easiest holiday budget is one that’s already paid for. Once this season is over, take the total you spent and divide it by 12. Hypothetical example: if this year’s holidays cost $1,200, setting aside $100 a month starting in January means next December is covered before it starts. Automate it if you can. A small transfer on payday is easier to stick with than a big one in November. ### The bottom line A holiday budget isn’t about saying no to the season. It’s about choosing where your money goes so January feels like a fresh start, not a cleanup job.
