## Joint Accounts and FDIC Insurance: How Much Is Actually Covered?

![](https://news.libertysavingsbank.com/hubfs/Sunlit%20Stroll%20Toward%20the%20Pier%20Pavilion.png)

Most people know the FDIC number: $250,000. Fewer know that a joint account doesn't follow the same math as an account in one person's name. Two people sharing an account can be covered for more than $250,000 at the same bank, but only if the account meets FDIC's rules, and only up to a limit that adds up across every joint account you share there.

Related Page: [Bradenton Community Bank Reviews](https://news.libertysavingsbank.com/blog/bradenton-community-bank-reviews)

Quick answer: FDIC insures joint accounts up to $250,000 per co-owner, per insured bank. A married couple with one joint account is covered up to $500,000 at that bank. That coverage is separate from what each person has in their own individual accounts, which means a couple can often be insured well beyond $500,000 at a single bank when accounts are titled correctly ([FDIC](https://www.fdic.gov/resources/deposit-insurance/brochures/deposits-at-a-glance)).

## What counts as a joint account for FDIC purposes

To FDIC, a joint account is a deposit owned by two or more people with no named beneficiaries. It covers the common ways joint accounts are titled under state law, including joint tenants with right of survivorship and tenants by the entirety, which is common for married couples in Florida.

To be insured in the joint account category, an account has to meet three requirements ([FDIC, Your Insured Deposits](https://www.fdic.gov/resources/deposit-insurance/brochures/insured-deposits)):

1. Every co-owner is a living person. A business, trust or estate can't be a joint owner.
2. Every co-owner has equal withdrawal rights. If one owner can withdraw alone but another needs a second signature, the rights aren't equal and the account won't qualify as joint.
3. Every co-owner has signed the signature card, on paper or electronically, or the bank's records otherwise establish co-ownership. This requirement doesn't apply to CDs.

Two details people often get wrong:

- A signer isn't an owner. Adding someone so they can pay your bills, or listing a power of attorney, doesn't make the account joint. FDIC treats an account with one owner and another person who can withdraw as a single account.
- Naming beneficiaries changes the category. If joint owners add payable-on-death beneficiaries, FDIC insures the account as a trust account instead, with different limits.

## How the math actually works

FDIC doesn't insure each joint account separately. It adds up each person's share of every joint account they own at that bank and insures that total up to $250,000. Shares are assumed equal unless the bank's records say otherwise.

The examples below are hypothetical and assume these are the only joint accounts each person has at the bank.

Example 1: One couple, two joint accounts. A Lakewood Ranch couple has a $300,000 joint CD and a $150,000 joint savings account at the same bank. That's $450,000 total, or $225,000 per person. Each share is under $250,000, so all $450,000 is insured.

Example 2: The same couple adds more. They move another $100,000 into a joint money market account. Now the total is $550,000, or $275,000 per person. Each person's share is $25,000 over the limit, so $50,000 is uninsured. Opening a third joint account didn't add coverage, because all three are owned by the same two people.

Example 3: Three owners. A Sarasota widow shares a $600,000 joint CD with her two adult children. Split three ways, each share is $200,000, so the CD is fully insured. But if she also has a $200,000 joint savings account with just one of those children, her total joint share becomes $300,000 ($200,000 from the CD plus $100,000 from the savings). Her share is now $50,000 over the limit.

| Example | Total in joint accounts | Each owner's share | Insured | Uninsured |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1: Couple, CD + savings | $450,000 | $225,000 | $450,000 | $0 |
| 2: Couple, three accounts | $550,000 | $275,000 | $500,000 | $50,000 |
| 3: Parent + two children, plus savings with one child | $800,000 | Parent $300,000; child A $300,000; child B $200,000 | $700,000 | $100,000 |

In Example 3, the parent and the child on both accounts each have $300,000 in joint shares, so each is $50,000 over. The other child is fully covered.

One more point from FDIC: rearranging the order of names, using "and" instead of "or," or swapping whose Social Security number is listed first does not change coverage.

## Joint accounts stack on top of other ownership categories

This is where couples can legitimately insure much more at one bank. FDIC insures each ownership category separately, so your joint coverage doesn't reduce your individual or retirement coverage ([FDIC, Deposit Insurance at a Glance](https://www.fdic.gov/resources/deposit-insurance/brochures/deposits-at-a-glance)).

| Ownership category | Who it covers | FDIC limit at one bank |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Single accounts | Accounts in one person's name, no beneficiaries | $250,000 per owner |
| Joint accounts | Two or more owners, no beneficiaries | $250,000 per co-owner |
| Certain retirement accounts | IRAs and similar | $250,000 per owner |
| Trust accounts (including POD) | Accounts with named beneficiaries | $250,000 per owner per eligible beneficiary, up to $1,250,000 per owner |

A hypothetical: a married couple in Venice with no beneficiaries named could have $250,000 each in individual accounts, $500,000 in a joint account and $250,000 each in IRA deposits at the same bank. That's up to $1.5 million insured, assuming every account meets FDIC's requirements.

Adding payable-on-death beneficiaries moves money into the trust category, which can raise coverage further. Under rules effective April 1, 2024, each trust owner is insured up to $250,000 per eligible beneficiary, capped at $1,250,000 per owner at one bank. That's a topic of its own, and it's worth a conversation with your banker before restructuring accounts.

## Common misconceptions

*"Each joint account gets its own $250,000."*
No. All your shares across every joint account at the same bank are added together. A second joint account with the same person adds no coverage.

*"Different branches mean separate coverage."*
No. Coverage is per bank, not per branch. Two branches of the same bank are one bank to FDIC. Separately chartered banks are insured separately.

*"Adding my daughter to my account doubles my coverage."*
Only if she becomes a true co-owner with equal withdrawal rights and signs the account documents. Making someone a co-owner also gives them legal access to the money, and can affect what happens to it when you die. That's a bigger decision than insurance, so weigh it carefully.

*"FDIC covers my money if someone steals it."*
FDIC insurance protects you if an insured bank fails. It doesn't cover losses from theft or fraud, which are handled under other laws and your bank's own policies.

*"Everything at my bank is insured."*
FDIC insures deposits like checking, savings, money market deposit accounts and CDs. It doesn't insure stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, crypto or safe deposit box contents, even if bought through a bank.

## What happens when a joint owner dies

When an account owner dies, FDIC continues to insure the deceased person's accounts as if they were still alive for six months, unless the accounts are restructured. That grace period gives the surviving owner time to retitle accounts without a sudden drop in coverage.

After that, the money in a joint account typically passes to the surviving owner under the account's terms and state law. If the survivor now holds everything in their own name, it may fall into the single account category, with a $250,000 limit. This is a good reason to review coverage within a few months of losing a spouse or co-owner.

## How to check your own coverage

1. List every account you own at the bank, including CDs, and note who owns each one and whether beneficiaries are named.
2. Group them by ownership category: single, joint, retirement, trust.
3. Divide each joint account by its number of owners and add up each person's shares.
4. Run the numbers in FDIC's calculator. The Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator, or [EDIE](https://edie.fdic.gov), does this for you. You can also call FDIC at 1-877-ASK-FDIC (1-877-275-3342).

If your total is getting close to the limit, you have options: restructure ownership categories, name beneficiaries, or spread deposits across separately chartered banks. Our guide to [protecting more than $250,000 in deposits](https://news.libertysavingsbank.com/blog/how-to-use-multi-banking-to-protect-more-than-250000-in-deposits) covers that last approach.

Deposit insurance coverage depends on how accounts are owned and titled and on FDIC regulations, which can change. For your specific situation, use FDIC's EDIE tool, contact FDIC directly or consult a qualified advisor.*
