New Fraud Alert: Fake CAPTCHA Tests Designed to Steal Your Information

At Liberty Savings Bank, protecting our community from fraud is one of our top priorities. Scammers are constantly coming up with new tactics, and we want to make sure you know what to watch for. Recently, a new fraud method has emerged that uses fake websites and phishing tactics to trick people into installing malware on their devices.

How the Scam Works

Fraudsters are creating fake “Verify You Are Human” tests that look like the common CAPTCHA challenges you’ve probably seen online. Instead of simply clicking a box or identifying pictures, these fake tests ask you to enter a series of keyboard commands, such as:

Win + R → CTRL + V → Enter

What happens behind the scenes is far more dangerous: these steps secretly install malware on your device. Once installed, the malware can steal sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, financial logins, and even give criminals access to your device.

These fraudulent prompts may appear on fake websites or even on legitimate websites that have been compromised. Because they look like normal security checks, they can be very convincing.

What You Can Do to Protect Yourself

To keep your information safe, follow these important tips:

  • Don’t trust unusual CAPTCHA requests. Real verification programs will never ask you to type out a series of keyboard shortcuts. If you see this, close the page immediately.
  • Be cautious of unexpected pop-ups. If something looks suspicious or out of place, don’t click.
  • Use security software. Run regular anti-virus and anti-malware scans on all your devices to catch potential threats early.
  • Monitor your credit. Check your credit report regularly for any unusual activity, such as accounts you didn’t open.
  • Stay informed. The more you know about new scams, the better prepared you are to protect yourself.
