But Sarasota and Manatee County have been settled for more than 150 years, and that's plenty of time for a few legends to take hold. Historic theaters, a Civil War-era mansion, old hotels and burial grounds all come with stories that locals have been passing along for generations. Related Article: [YOUR GUIDE TO THE NEIGHBORHOODS OF SARASOTA, FLORIDA](https://news.libertysavingsbank.com/blog/your-guide-to-the-neighborhoods-of-sarasota-florida) Here's a tour of the area's most talked-about haunts. A quick note before we start: the history below is real and sourced. The ghosts are legends, shared for Halloween fun. Whether you believe them is up to you. ## Manatee County ### Braden Castle Ruins, Bradenton The history: The city of Bradenton takes its name from Dr. Joseph Addison Braden, a Virginia physician who built a two-story sugar plantation house near where the Braden River meets the Manatee River around 1850. It was built by enslaved laborers from tabby, a mix of lime, sand, crushed shells and water, and the walls were so thick that locals called it "the Castle." During the Third Seminole War, a group of Seminoles attacked the house in 1856, and the walls held. Braden lost the property to foreclosure in 1857, and a woods fire destroyed most of what remained in 1903 ([Florida Historical Marker](https://markers.flheritage.com/home/details/473)). The legend: After the house was abandoned, overgrown and dark, stories spread that the ruins were haunted. Campers reported strange sounds coming from inside the thick walls. According to a local retelling in [The Bradenton Times](https://thebradentontimes.com/stories/sunday-favorites-local-hauntings,112896), the "ghost" turned out to be a very much alive animal using the ruins as a den at night. Sometimes the scariest thing in Florida is the wildlife. Visiting: The ruins sit inside Braden Castle Park, a historic district and residential community. They're fenced off but visible, so be respectful of the residents. ### Emerson Point Preserve, Palmetto The history: This preserve at the mouth of the Manatee River protects land where Native people lived as far back as 4,500 years ago, long before European settlement. The legend: Some locals swear that a shrieking creature has been startling visitors here since the earliest settlers arrived ([Sarasota Magazine](https://www.sarasotamagazine.com/news-and-profiles/2025/10/sarasota-haunted-places)). Whether it's a cryptid, an owl or something else entirely, it makes for a great story on the walk back to the car at sunset. ### Manatee Burying Ground, Bradenton The history: Established in 1850, this is one of the oldest cemeteries in the area and the resting place of many of Manatee County's pioneer families. Visit Bradenton Gulf Islands includes it on its list of the area's [spooky places](https://bradentongulfislands.com/?p=9696). The legend: Old pioneer cemeteries attract ghost stories everywhere, and this one is no exception. It's a peaceful, historic spot best visited in daylight with respect for those buried there. ## Sarasota ### Sarasota Opera House, Downtown Sarasota The history: The Opera House opened on April 10, 1926, as the Edwards Theatre, built by A.B. Edwards, Sarasota's first mayor. It hosted silent films, vaudeville and touring acts before it was renamed the Florida Theatre. In 1979, the Asolo Opera Guild bought the aging building, and it reopened as the Sarasota Opera House in the 1980s ([Sarasota Opera](https://www.sarasotaopera.org/about-sarasota-opera-house)). This year, the building is celebrating its 100th birthday. The legend: What's an opera house without a phantom? Employees have told of hearing shuffling footsteps in the hall late at night, a friendly spirit said to be searching for a theatergoing companion ([Visit Sarasota](https://www.visitsarasota.com/blog/spooky-spots-ghost-stories-and-haunted-sites-historic-sarasota)). After a century of curtain calls, maybe someone just doesn't want the show to end. ### The "Ghost Hotel," Longboat Key The history: In March 1926, circus magnate John Ringling started building a grand Ritz-Carlton on the south end of Longboat Key. When Florida's land boom collapsed, he halted construction that November. The half-built shell sat empty for more than three decades, slowly swallowed by vines and Australian pines. Locals started calling it "the Ghost Hotel." It was finally demolished in January 1964 ([Longboat Observer](https://www.yourobserver.com/article/ghost-hotel)). The legend: The abandoned skeleton became a hangout for curious teenagers and explorers, and stories of strange encounters followed. Today the Chart House restaurant building stands near the site, and some have reported unexplained sounds and wandering spirits in the dining room. ### The Gator Club, Downtown Sarasota The history: The two-story brick building at Main Street and Lemon Avenue went up in 1912 as a grocery store with a family residence upstairs. Over the decades, it reportedly served as a cigar shop, an ice cream parlor, a speakeasy and even a brothel before becoming the nightclub it is today ([Sarasota Magazine](https://www.sarasotamagazine.com/news-and-profiles/2021/10/most-haunted-places-sarasota)). The legend: Staff say the brothel's madam never checked out. She's blamed for playing tricks on new hires, apparently to see if they're tough enough to stay. Ghost tours make it a regular stop. ### Ca' d'Zan, The Ringling The history: John and Mable Ringling's Venetian Gothic mansion on Sarasota Bay was completed in the 1920s and is now part of The Ringling museum complex. The legend: Some visitors claim to have glimpsed John and Mable still enjoying their home, sometimes along with their dog ([Longboat Observer](https://www.yourobserver.com/news/2016/oct/31/sarasota-shows-its-spooky-side)). If you had a bayfront mansion like that, you might not want to leave either. ## Osprey and Venice ### Historic Spanish Point, Osprey The history: With an archaeological record stretching back roughly 5,000 years, this bayfront site includes prehistoric shell middens, pioneer homesteads and the gardens of Bertha Palmer, the Chicago socialite who wintered here in the early 1900s and helped put Sarasota on the map ([Visit Sarasota](https://www.visitsarasota.com/blog/spooky-spots-ghost-stories-and-haunted-sites-historic-sarasota)). The legend: Five thousand years of human history make Historic Spanish Point a contender for the most storied ground in Sarasota County. Palmer's ghost is rumored to stroll her estate gardens from time to time, still admiring the view. ### Downtown Venice The history: Venice was developed in the 1920s by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and strict architectural rules have kept much of its Mediterranean Revival character intact. The historic Lord-Higel House is considered the second-oldest house in Sarasota County. The legend: Downtown Venice has enough ghost stories to fill a nighttime walking tour. Stops include the Venice Theatre, which has its own lore ([Fodor's](https://www.fodors.com/world/north-america/usa/florida/experiences/news/photos/venice-might-be-floridas-best-kept-and-quirkiest-secret)), and buildings like the former Dick & Meadows Pharmacy, now Carney's Pub & Grill ([Solo Travel Girl](https://solotravelgirl.com/florida-travel-venice-ghost-tours-sarasota)). Guides even bring along the equipment paranormal investigators use, so you can try your own hand at ghost hunting. ## Want to go ghost hunting? Take a local tour If you'd rather hear these stories from someone holding a lantern, several local companies run haunted tours ([Visit Sarasota](https://visitsarasota.com/blog/spooky-sarasota-haunted-places-ghost-stories-halloween-experiences)): - Haunted Sarasota by Discover Sarasota Tours: a nighttime trolley tour of downtown haunts, led by a costumed "Ghost Hostess," with surprise characters along the way. - Ghosts & Gruesomes of Sarasota by Sarasota Suncoast Tours: a walking tour through the darker side of downtown history. - Haunted History Walking Tour by Venice Florida Tours: a stroll through downtown Venice that includes a primer on ghost-hunting tools. Schedules, prices and age requirements change, especially around Halloween, so check each company's website and book early. ## A few friendly reminders - Respect private property. Several of these spots are homes, businesses or active cemeteries. Admire from public areas and follow posted hours. - Daylight is your friend for cemeteries and preserves. - The scariest thing this Halloween might be in your inbox. Fake delivery texts and phishing emails spike around the holidays. Here's [how to spot a phishing email claiming to be from your bank](https://news.libertysavingsbank.com/blog/how-do-i-verify-if-an-email-claiming-to-be-from-a-bank-is-a-phishing-scam).
