People use them to build a budget, make sense of a confusing medical bill, draft a letter to a landlord, or compare two loan offers side by side. But it's easy to forget that a chatbot isn't a private notebook. What you type, and every document or screenshot you upload, is sent to a company's servers, where it may be stored and, depending on your settings, used to train future versions of the AI. The simplest rule comes from privacy experts: treat anything you type into a chatbot as if it could become public. Here's what that means for your money, and how to keep using AI without putting your accounts at risk. ## What Actually Happens to What You Type Every AI company has its own policies, and they change often. But a few things are true of the most popular tools, and they're worth knowing before you paste anything in. - Your chats may be used to train the AI. OpenAI says that ChatGPT improves by training on users' conversations unless you opt out. Other consumer chatbots have similar settings. Business versions are often handled differently, but most people use the free or personal version. - "Private" modes still keep a copy for a while. ChatGPT's Temporary Chat mode keeps conversations out of your history and out of training, but OpenAI still holds them for up to 30 days before deleting them. - Sharing a chat can make it public. In mid-2025, thousands of ChatGPT conversations that users had turned into share links showed up in Google search results, some containing names, resumes, and personal details. OpenAI removed the feature that allowed it, but the lesson stands: a share link is a public web page. - Accounts can be compromised. If someone gets into your AI account through a reused password or a phishing email, they can scroll through your entire chat history. None of this means AI tools are unsafe to use. It means your chat history deserves the same caution as your email inbox: assume anything in it could someday be seen by someone else. ## The Never-Paste List These are the items that can do real damage if they end up in the wrong hands. None of them is needed for an AI tool to help you. | Never paste | Why it's risky | What to do instead | | --- | --- | --- | | Account and routing numbers | Enough to attempt fraudulent transfers or checks | Delete them, or write "checking account" | | Credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates, CVV codes | Enough to make purchases in your name | Use the last four digits at most, or nothing | | Social Security number | The master key to identity theft: new accounts, loans, tax refunds | Never needed. Leave it out | | Passwords, PINs, and one-time codes | Gives direct access to your accounts | Never share. No legitimate tool will ask | | Full account statements | Combine your name, address, account numbers, and spending patterns in one place | Copy only the transactions you need, with identifying details removed | | Tax returns and W-2s | Contain your SSN, income, employer, and dependents' information | Ask the question in general terms, or talk to a tax professional | | Photos of your driver's license, passport, or checks | Can be reused to impersonate you or forge documents | Never upload ID or check images | | Login screens or security questions | Screenshots can capture usernames, balances, and answers to security questions | Crop or blur before sharing anything | | Other people's information | Your parent's, child's, or client's details aren't yours to share | Use initials or generic terms like "my mother" | *A good test: if you wouldn't post it on a public bulletin board, don't paste it into a chatbot.* ## How to Use AI For Money Questions Safely You can get almost all the benefit of AI without sharing anything sensitive. The trick is to give it the numbers and the situation, not your identity. ### Strip it down before you paste. Compare these two requests: - Risky: "Here's my statement from \[bank\], account ending 4417, for John Smith at 123 Main St. Where am I overspending?" - Safe: "Here are my spending totals last month: groceries $820, dining out $410, subscriptions $96, gas $240. Where could I cut back?" The second version gets you the same advice and exposes nothing. ### Adjust your settings. A few minutes now limits what's stored later: 1. Turn off training. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Data Controls and switch off "Improve the model for everyone." Other chatbots have a similar privacy setting. 2. Use a temporary or incognito mode for anything personal, so it isn't saved to your history. 3. Protect the account itself. Use a unique password and turn on two-factor authentication, just as you would for your bank. 4. Clean up old chats and share links. Delete conversations you no longer need, and check for any shared links you've created (in ChatGPT, under Settings → Data Controls → Shared Links). Double-check the answers. AI tools can sound confident and still be wrong about interest calculations, tax rules, or loan terms. Use them to understand your options, then confirm the details with a real person before you make a financial decision.   ## Watch Out For Fake AI Tools Scammers know how popular these tools are, so they imitate them. Being careful about what you paste only helps if you're using the real thing. ### Fake AI apps Security firm Kaspersky reported more than 92,000 attacks in 2026 involving fake AI apps that impersonate ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, with fake ChatGPT apps making up nearly half. They look real but install malware or harvest your data. ### Sponsored search results In one 2026 campaign, researchers found that victims reached a malicious page through a paid Google ad for "ChatGPT." The page then walked them through a fake "security check" that installed malware. ### "AI trading bots" and AI investment platforms Promises of guaranteed returns from AI-powered trading are a common lure. The FBI reported more than $632 million in 2025 investment fraud losses where victims mentioned AI. ### Chatbots that ask for sensitive information A real AI assistant has no reason to ask for your Social Security number, card number, or bank login. Any tool that does should be treated as a scam. Download AI apps only from the official app store listing published by the company, type the website address yourself instead of clicking ads, and never follow a chatbot's instructions to paste commands into your computer.   ## Already Shared Something? Here's What to Do Don't panic. Pasting something into a chatbot doesn't mean it has been stolen. But a few quick steps will limit the risk. 1. Delete the conversation and any share link you created from it. 2. Change any password, PIN, or security answer you shared, and turn on two-factor authentication. 3. If you shared a card or account number, call your bank. Use the number on the back of your card or on your statement, not one from a search result. Ask about replacing the card and setting up account alerts. 4. If you shared your Social Security number, consider freezing your credit with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. A freeze is free and stops anyone from opening new credit in your name. 5. Watch your accounts for a few months for unfamiliar transactions or new accounts, and report identity theft at[IdentityTheft.gov](https://www.identitytheft.gov) if you spot any.   ## Use AI as a Starting Point, Not as a Banker AI tools are great for organizing your thoughts, learning the vocabulary, and figuring out what questions to ask. They can't see your full financial picture, and they can't be held accountable for their answers.
