It's your grandson, and he's panicking. He's been in an accident, or arrested, or stranded somewhere. He needs money right now, and he begs you not to tell his parents. It sounds exactly like him. But it isn't. And one of the easiest places to find that recording is somewhere most of us never think about, the greeting on our voicemail. October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so it's a good time to take a few simple steps that make this scam much harder to pull off. ## How AI voice cloning works Voice-cloning software listens to a sample of someone speaking, learns the patterns of their voice, and then generates new speech that sounds like them saying anything the user types. It takes surprisingly little audio. In a 2023 study, researchers at security firm McAfee found more than a dozen voice-cloning tools freely available online. In one test, just three seconds of audio produced a clone with an 85% match to the original voice, and a few more recordings pushed that to 95%. The technology has only improved since. The FBI has warned that cloned voices can sound nearly identical to the real person, and that the telltale signs are getting harder to hear. Newer tools can even work in real time, letting a scammer hold a live, back-and-forth conversation in someone else's voice. ## How scammers use a cloned voice The voice is just the hook. ### The scam itself follows familiar patterns: - The family emergency. A "grandchild" or "son" calls in distress, often handed off to a fake lawyer or police officer who explains where to send bail or hospital money. - The "virtual kidnapping." The FBI has warned about calls claiming a loved one has been abducted, sometimes using a cloned voice and altered photos. In many cases, the supposed victim is safe and has no idea their voice is being used. - The boss or business partner. The FTC has described scammers cloning an executive's voice to get employees to wire money or pay a fake invoice. Small businesses are especially exposed because one person often approves payments. - The trusted official. In 2025, the FBI warned of AI-generated voice messages impersonating senior U.S. government officials. ### The red flags are the same every time: - Urgency: you have to act right now - Secrecy: "Don't tell Mom" or "Don't call the bank" - Unusual payment: gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or a courier coming to pick up cash - A story you can't easily check A familiar voice doesn't override any of these. Treat the voice as unverified until you've confirmed it yourself.   ## Where scammers get your voice Scammers don't need to hack anything. They collect audio people share without thinking twice: - Your voicemail greeting. A personal greeting *("Hi, you've reached Linda, I can't come to the phone…")* is a clean, clear recording of your voice. Anyone can hear it just by calling your number and letting it ring. - Social media videos. Birthday toasts, vacation clips, Facebook Lives, and TikTok or Instagram videos are often public. McAfee's survey found more than half of adults share their voice online at least once a week. - Unknown calls you answer. A caller who keeps you talking, even briefly, can record your voice. - Public recordings. Interviews, podcasts, church or community videos, and business promotional videos. The goal isn't to disappear from the internet. It's to stop making your voice, and your family's voices, so easy to collect. ## Five things to change today Each of these takes a few minutes, and together they make you a much harder target. 1. Switch to your phone's default voicemail greeting. The automated greeting reads back your number in a computer voice instead of yours. On an iPhone, open the Phone app, tap Voicemail, tap Greeting, and choose Default. On Android, the steps vary by carrier, but the setting is usually in the Phone or Voicemail app. 2. Leave your name out of any greeting you keep. If you prefer a personal greeting, keep it short and skip your full name, so a scammer can't confirm who owns the number. 3. Let unknown numbers go to voicemail. If the call matters, the caller will leave a message. Many phones can silence unknown callers automatically. 4. Tighten your social media settings. Make accounts private, limit followers to people you know, and think twice before posting videos where you or your kids are talking. The FBI specifically recommends limiting public recordings of your voice. 5. Share this with the people you love. Older parents and grandparents are frequent targets of family-emergency scams. Walk them through these steps, and do the next one together. ## Your best defense: a family safe word and a call-back rule Since you can't always tell a cloned voice from a real one, the answer is to stop relying on the voice at all. Set up a family safe word. The FBI recommends that families agree on a secret word or phrase to confirm who's really calling in an emergency. ### A few tips: - Pick something random that isn't on social media. Not a pet's name, street, or birthday. - Share it in person, not by text or email. - Make sure everyone knows the rule: if someone calls in a crisis and can't give the word, hang up. - Change it if you ever suspect someone outside the family learned it. Always hang up and call back. Even with a safe word, the strongest move is to end the call and reach the person yourself, using the number you already have saved. If you can't reach them, call another family member who would know where they are. A real emergency will still be real five minutes later. A scam usually falls apart. The same rule applies to calls that sound like your bank, your boss, or a government agency: hang up, then call the number you already know, not the one the caller gives you. ## If you get a suspicious call 1. Don't send money or share account information during the call, no matter how urgent it sounds. 2. Hang up and verify using a number you already have. 3. If you already sent money, call your bank immediately. The sooner you report it, the better the chance of stopping a transfer. Use the number on your card or statement. 4. Report it to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at[IC3.gov](https://www.ic3.gov) and to the FTC at[ReportFraud.ftc.gov](https://reportfraud.ftc.gov). Reports help investigators spot patterns and warn others. 5. Tell your family. If a scammer cloned one relative's voice, they may try the same trick on others. ## A few minutes now can save a lot of heartache Voice-cloning scams work because they target the people we love most and give us no time to think. Changing your voicemail greeting and agreeing on a family safe word take less time than reading this article, and they take away the scammer's two biggest advantages.
